Turkey is considered to be the world’s 15th and Europe’s 6th biggest economy, OECD predicts that Turkey will overtake India as the second-fastest growing economy by 2017, and become the second-largest economy in Europe by 2050.

Over more than 50 million of the population is between 15-64 ages and less than 7 percent is older than 65 which makes Turkey a young country with an deep interest to technological products. Over the last years, digital media consumption in Turkey increased steadily in  parallel to the significant growth of internet consumption and 3G penetration.

Turkey Pay-TV market has a penetration rate of 26 percent. Out of 18 million household around 4,6 million household is subscribed to a Pay-TV platform. Digiturk with more than 2.5 million subscribers is the strongest player in the market. Turkish people love watching TV. According to the research of AGB Nielsen[1] Turkey is the 8th most TV watching country in the world with 257 minutes per day.

Additionally, according to the study of Médiamétrie[2] the satellite penetration rate is 70,4 percent which turns out to be 12,7 million households. Remembering that D-Smart and Digiturk have a total of 4.1 million subscribers as stated in the latest BTK report[3] concludes that there are still 8,6 millions of satellite-broadcast receiving homes without being a pay-TV subsciber.

Having said that, in average every year around 1,5 million of STBs with HD majority are sold at retail market. There are tens of different suppliers in competition in this market. Although there are merely 4 FTA HD channels the pay-TV platforms are offering many HD channels of various genres. While Digiturk is offering a total of 30 HD channels, its main rival D-Smart is hosting 26 HD channels.

There are more than 250 digital TV channels originating from Turkey. The majority of them are FTA channels.
